About
The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene, Munster Square (Mary Mag’s to its friends) is rather like Dr Who’s tardis: the outside gives little indication of the inside.
Situated at the extreme southern boundary of the London Borough of Camden it mainly serves the Regents Park Estate although the parish also includes the imposing Nash terraces on the eastern side of Regent’s Park. Formed from the amalgamation of the parishes of Christ Church, Albany Street, and St Mary Magdalene, Munster Square, the parish stretches from the Euston Road up to Camden.
Although only a few minutes walk from the West End, the church looks north, into the estate it serves, almost as if turning its back on the glittering wealth to the south.
The church has very strong links with its school, Christ Church School. Mass is said twice a term in the school and the children regularly come to church for big celebrations.
As well as a stunning interior, St Mary Magdalene’s is also blessed with a marvellous acoustic, and is quickly becoming a popular venue for concerts and recitals. With its movable seating it can rapidly be transformed to suit any musical performance. The church is lucky enough to have two grand pianos on permanent loan from Markson Pianos, one of which is a renowned Bosendorfer Concert Grand. Since 2009 it has been home to the Chamber Academy Orchestra.
Below the church is the Crypt Centre, which, despite its name, is a wonderfully warm and comfortable space. With its kitchen, lift and other facilities it is home to the Third Age Project, several companies, a branch of Narcotics Anonymous and from January to March, every Saturday night, it houses fourteen homeless guests as part of the Camden and City Churches Cold Weather Shelter (C4WS).
